Interreg IIIB NWE Urban Water Project – Sustainable Water Management in Urban Space

Brief summary

The vision of the Urban Water Project was to develop a holistic and generally systemic approach for sustainable water management in urban areas. The partners worked together on solutions to integrate spatial planning and water management. The five main objectives of the project were:

  1. Improved water systems in urban areas;
  2. Improved cooperation and understanding between spatial planners and water managers;
  3. Improved regulation and policies stimulating the implementation of sound water management practices in spatial planning;
  4. Transnational exchange of experiences and knowledge transfer to regional, national and supranational bodies
  5. Awareness of the general public for challenges related to water in urban areas.

The role of University of Abertay included:

  • Develop spatial plans for the future integration of SUDS into the local environment. This involved
  • the development of GIS plans for advice on desired arterial sewers, SUDS and watercourses for development and redevelopment
  • the development of GIS plans for advice on flood attenuation storage requirements for development and redevelopment based on subcatchments.
  • Deliver a communication document ‘Water Vision for Johnstone’. The water vision document was aimed at raising awareness of water related issues in the area and providing cost effective integrated solutions to local practitioners and non-technical audiences such as local residents and politicians.
