Early in the development of the SD:SPUR Main guidance, it became apparent that the options assessment approach adopted would need to be underpinned by sustainability principles/ indicators informed by the views of the full spectrum of interested parties.
In order to identify these principles, CIRIA with the support of the facilitation team and PSG developed a one-day workshop held on the 13th July 2004 and attended by people from the following organisations:
CANSAR, British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA), Golder Associates, Local Government Association Special Interest Group for Radioactive Waste Management, Highways Agency, Bradtec Decon Technologies Ltd, Atomic Weapons Establishment, DTI Liabilities Management Unit, United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, Enviros, BNFL, MoD, North Highland College’s Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation Centre, Welsh Anti-Nuclear Alliance, Nuclear Free Local Authorities, CND Cymru, British Energy, Tarmac Recycling, Low Level Radiation Campaign and Greenpeace.
The day utilised a carousel process, whereby delegates were split into 4 groups with each group being asked in turn to brainstorm principles under the PSG determined headings; Safety, Societal, Environmental and Economic.
A description of how the output from the workshop was used to develop the suite of indicators for the SD:SPUR Main guidance can be viewed in Appendix E of the document.
