SD:SPUR Main guidance

Good practice guidance on the application of sustainable practices to the management of decommissioning wastes from nuclear licensed sites
W Miller and J Tooley, 2005

The SD:SPUR Main guidance is the outcome of the CIRIA managed SD:SPUR project which ran for 20 months from November 2003. It provides guidance to waste managers and strategy developers on nuclear sites on how they can incorporate the concepts of sustainability when identifying and assessing options for the management of redundant buildings, plant and equipment and decommissioning wastes.

Throughout the preparation of this guidance, it was recognised that stakeholders, both individuals and organisations, hold a range of diverse but legitimate views on the issue of the reuse and recycling of wastes from nuclear sites. The SD:SPUR project worked closely with stakeholder groups including the nuclear and defence industries; NGOs and community based organisations; government bodies (including regulators, local authorities and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority); the construction and demolition industries; and other organisations, including universities.

The guidance has been developed to be directly applicable to, and complementary with, the methodological requirements of developing site Integrated Waste Strategy (IWS).

New: SD:SPUR scoping documents

Quintessa and Golder Associates, August 2009

These four documents have been designed to support the development of detailed guides relating to the management of decommissioning wastes and items from nuclear licensed sites.

The need for such guides, covering activities and decision processes implemented by waste management practitioners, has been identified by members of the SD:SPUR project steering group. The guidance notes can be downloaded below:

Guidance note 1: Waste Characterisation and Management of Residual Wastes
Guidance note 2: Develop Management Strategy for Wastes and Materials
Guidance note 3: Selection of Management Options for Waste and Items
Guidance note 4: Implementation of Management Options
