SD:SPUR wins rushlight nuclear award 2009

SD:SPUR, the initiative for sustainable practices in decommissioning of nuclear sites, is proud to announce their winning of the 2010 Rushlight® Awards in the Nuclear category.

The Nuclear Award celebrates and promotes the significant achievements in developing new and existing technologies that reduce the impact of nuclear power generation on the environment.

During a successful and entertaining evening, the Nuclear award was collected by Sean Amos, from AWE a long standing project steering group member of both SD:SPUR and SAFEGROUNDS learning networks.

Sean Amos of AWE commented:sean_amos

“SD:SPUR, a consortia of; industry, regulators, academia and CBOs has produced good practice guidance documents for the management of solid radioactive, and solid non radioactive wastes at nuclear licensed sites.  This has been possible due to the willingness of all participants to recognise that this can be done in a way that addresses the expectations of the broad stakeholder group.

That the judging panel, with its range of criteria, saw fit to award the project with the Nuclear Award is a rewarding acknowledgment of how the project has developed and delivered. This independent view on what SD:SPUR has achieved over the last year should invigorate the project team to continued improvements”.

The Nuclear award also looked at projects that inform the consumer about the latest industry achievements and explored available development and investment opportunities in technologies that allow significant reduction of environmental impact created by the nuclear industry.

The category was open to any organisation having developed a technology to help reduce the impact of the nuclear industry on the environment. The examined submissions therefore included areas such as: fuel preparation, recycling, power generation, waste management and contamination management.
