Waste disposal

Flooding creates a lot of waste that will need to be removed from the property and disposed of, such as ruined furniture and carpets, sodden plasterboard and warped wooden doors. Building work will create more waste once it gets underway. Local authorities may be able to take away a certain amount of waste through normal refuse collection, but normally flooding waste will need to be loaded into skips. Local authorities may sometimes provide these or give advice on where to get them, - contact the municipal waste section of your local authority or any helpline that they have set up. Waste sent to local tips will be classified as controlled waste and must be handled properly. Waste management firms will advise on procedures (see Yellow Pages or the Yell.com Web site).

If you will be making an insurance claim, do not dispose of anything until you have been told that you may. If in doubt, take photographs of damaged items.
