On 2 October 2009, the EMSAGG steering committee visited the exciting Maasvlakte 2 project. The Maasvlakte 2 project is a mega land reclamation project in the Netherlands that involves a port area expansion of about 2000 ha. During the first phase, an 11 km long sea defences will be constructed as well as c700 ha of the harbour premises.
Early in 2008, the design, construct and maintenance (DCM) contract of the first phase of Maasvlakte 2 (the seaward extension of the Port of Rotterdam) was awarded to PUMA – a joint venture of Boskalis and Van Oord.
The day at Maasvlakte 2 included three presentations offered by PUMA:
1. Gerard Loman gave an insight in the functional requirements and verified design of the project.
2. Fedor Meulenkamp outlined the geotechnical investigations and interpretation of the sand borrow area of Maasvlakte 2.
3. Dirk Hamer concluded the session by exploring the planning and execution of the works.
Following the presentations, PUMA hosted a site tour of Maasvlakte 2. The site visit started at the Futureland information centre. Futureland is situated next to the port construction and offers fantastic views of the work being undertaken from its panorama deck. Within its 1800 m² it also offers an insight into the many different aspects involved in the construction of a new port, including the number of interactive activities, such as a virtual trip over the Maasvlakte or a look into 2033 with the Future Flight Experience.

CIRIA's coastal and marine group is currently working on the following proposals and projects:
New CIRIA Guidance - Cost standards for dredging equipment 2009 (C684) |
C684 - Cost standards for dredging equipment 2009 is now available. This publication is intended for use by all stakeholders in dredging projects which include consultants, existing and potential clients, project financiers, insurers and dredging contractors. The publication offers a standard method to establish the capital and related costs of various types of dredging plant and equipment commonly in use. |
RP927 International Levee Handbook |
CIRIA is involved with an international collaborative research project developing a single, comprehensive levee handbook collating international practices and knowledge will make dissemination and wider uptake of consistent standards and approaches more effective, proving greater value for money with countries applying best practice suitable to their local conditions. The use of levees (also known as flood defence embankments) remains an important physical means of flood risk management. In the future, major programmes of work will be required to assess and improve the protection provided by levees, addressing the challenges of poor quality design and construction as well as the deteriorating condition of levees and the implementation of adaptation measures to respond to climate change and population growth. Thus far, good practice on levees has not been widely shared between international and national organisations, and consequently benefits of improving the effectiveness of assessment, design, construction and management of levees has not been realised. |
CON 177 Geo-Seas |
The overall objective of the Geo-Seas project is to build and deploy a unified marine geo-scientific data infrastructure within Europe that will affect a data grid. This will result in a major and significant improvement in locating, accessing and delivering federated marine geological and geophysical data and data-products from national geological surveys and research institutes in Europe to research communities. |
RP787 - CIRIA Beach management manual |
CIRIA is in the process of updating another well respected publication, the 1996 CIRIA Beach management manual. An Environment Agency scoping study was completed in 2007 identifying a number of changes and additions to be made to the existing manual to increase the uptake and use of the manual. These changes included targeting beach managers who are increasingly non-engineers, and more involved with the amenity aspects of beach rather than coastal defence. If you would like to know more about the project please contact Kristina Gamst. Email: kristina.gamst@ciria.org |
RP764 - Use of concrete in maritime structures |
CIRIA is currently working on a new manual on the use of concrete in maritime engineering. The manual will address an identified gap in structured guidance documents available with regard to the use of concrete in maritime structures. The manual will focus on the use of marine concrete in highly abrasive environments where high levels of degradation are likely to occur, including coastal defences, port structures and breakwaters. This combined with the rise in sea levels and foreshore erosion has identified a growing need to consider the option for maintenance of the existing hard defence structures in and around strategically important urban areas. If you would like to know more about this project, please contact Kristina Gamst. Email: kristina.gamst@ciria.org |

The comprehensive and profound impact of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on Society is a very known fact. In turn, private, public and academic organizations are generating new requirements and demands that must be addressed by ICT. Demand-Pull and Technological-Push are interacting with each other through cybernetic loops. Society and ICT are co-regulating each other via negative Feedback Loops and synergistically co-evolving via positive feedback loops. On the other hands, ICT is increasingly supporting synergistic relationships among three important societal domain: the private, the public and the academic sector. The known universities- industries-governments Triple Helix Model support the conception, design and implementation of ICT-Driven Triple Helix Innovations.

The massive scale of the seasonal mobility of population is a comparatively recent phenomenon which imposes considerable stress on the environment and is particularly acute in the case of coastal regions and islands. The problems are more serious for the case of islands or archipelagos which have limited resources and possibilities of developing supporting infrastructures.
Most islands cannot provide all resources required to maintain a large seasonal tourist population and in many cases basic requirements such as water and energy, as well as agricultural produce, need to be imported.
The impact of large seasonal population increases in the community and the resulting socio-economic factors need to be carefully evaluated, as well as issues related to transportation and communication, all of which should be part of an overall strategy.
Different islands present a variety of diverse problems but much can be learned by sharing experiences in an appropriate form. This conference on Island Sustainability provides that opportunity.

Climate change is one of the most urgent problems and a huge challenge for mankind. In its tradition to be the "modern classic" the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin will host an international scientific congress on the consequences of climate change on a continental scale. The Alma Mater Berolinensis will offer a platform to discuss the state of knowledge of climate change and its risks for nature and humans. Contributions from natural sciences are expected to provide information about the internal mechanisms of the climate system. However, the congress aims to identify and synthesise the socio-economic and political impacts of climate change as well.
The aim of the congress is to strengthen the awareness of the impacts on different natural environments and socio-economic systems. In the best tradition of the Humboldt brothers the scientific results of climate impact research have to be transferred to society. So, the congress is destinated to scientists, decision makers, students and the interested public. At the beginning of the post-Kyoto-process the congress should be a reminder of the overall importance of climate change.
