Floor, ceiling and wall covering

Ceilings, walls and floors do not only cover and protect other installations such as cables and pipes, but need to be robust and strong enough to withstand the forces they are exposed to. These forces vary between the internal and external environment, but both require careful design in terms of material use (plasterboard, wood and concrete principally), installation technique (including use of adhesives) and maintenance.

Key environmental issues include:

• air pollution (e.g. from spraying on paints or adhesives)
• choice of materials (e.g. selected in terms of durability)
• materials sourced from sutatinable sources and suppliers
• dust created by installation or removal of materials
• fireproofing requirements (refer to Building Regulations)
• odours that are potentially hazardous (e.g. from adhesives)
• waste minimisation (e.g. reduction of offcuts).
