Asphalt (tarmac) laying and removal

Most work with asphalt (tarmac) takes place during highway maintenance. It generally involves the removal of the surface layer of the road pavement and its replacement with new material.

However, asphalt's and bitumen are also used extensively in flat roof applications, (often by less experienced operatives) where the risk of environmental damage may be greater.

Key environmental issues include:

• noise and vibration created by machinery used to remove the road pavement
• odours created during removal of the road pavement
• recycling of materials removed from the road pavement
• risk of spillage (e.g. of oils and bitumen) through incorrect storage or handling
• waste minimisation through efficient use of materials.
